Grayscale Gallery and 1933 Classic Tattoos invite you to “13 Liners”, an exhibition of prints by thirteen of the finest tattoo artists from around the country. The show is the first of its kind in South Africa and presents the wide variety of styles developing in the local tattoo industry.
With tattoo's growing popularity and general acceptance in mainstream culture, it is becoming necessary for a tattoo artist to stand out from the rest and offer something unique to their clientele. This is achieved through good quality tattoos but equally as important, through style.
Each of the tattooists in the show have recognised the need to develop their own individual style of tattooing while at the same time exploring various artistic mediums outside of the tattoo studio. These artists are inspired by a range of artforms, taking what they learn through creating art and tattoos and allowing each to influence the other.
As part of an ongoing project this exhibition presents the first series of thirteen editioned prints.
Each of the artworks are printed in collaboration with screen-printer Lingo Rodrigues and are limited to thirteen prints and thirteen T-shirts.

The title refers to the general public's perception that nothing good can come of the youth being involved in sub-cultures such as skateboarding, graffiti and tattoos. There is a prevailing misconception that anyone taking part in such activities must be suffering from boredom and have nothing better to do with their time.
The artists in this exhibition have dedicated themselves to their artforms despite being sidelined and dismissed by the mainstream world. They are proof that their so called indulgence can in fact be constructive.
